Memorable Engagement Rings: Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor’s passion for magnificent jewelry has been well documented. She wrote a book called “My Love Affair With Jewelry” and her jewelry collection was auctioned for more than $150,000,000. She married eight times and received several stunning engagement rings, including a 29.4 carat emerald cut engagement ring from Mike Todd in 1957. Her love, actor Richard Burton, proposed to her with an emerald and diamond necklace created by Bulgari that included a 18.61 carat emerald, which could also be worn as a brooch. A couple of years into their first marriage, Burton also gave her a 33.19 carat, Asscher cut D color VS1 clarity diamond ring. The diamond was part of the Vera Krupp estate and Burton purchased it at an auction in New York in 1968, for $305,000, a record-breaking price at the time of $9,200 per carat. After Elizabeth Taylor passed away, the diamond’s name changed from “Krupp Diamond” to the “Elizabeth Taylor Diamond” and sold at auction for $8.8 million dollars, which is more than $265,000 per carat. Elizabeth Taylor wore the diamond for more than 40 years and loved it so much, she called it “my baby.” To this day, an emerald cut diamond and an Asscher cut diamond continue to be a bold but classic choice for an engagement ring. The Sapphire Engagement Ring

When it comes to engagement rings, diamonds are the gemstone of choice. But for some stylish women, only a regal sapphire will do. The most famous sapphire engagement ring belonged to Princess Diana. The Popularity of the Round Brilliant Diamond Engagement Ring

It’s engagement season and the perfect time to ask: why is the round brilliant diamond engagement ring so popular? The round diamond engagement ring continues to be the most sought after shape. One of the main reasons why 75 percent of diamonds on the market are round is because round diamonds sparkle the most. All other shapes (like princess or marquise) reflect a little less light, and therefore, sparkle a little less. While the round cut has been around for centuries, it has gone through many transitions. Cutters have been experimenting for years with facet sizes and proportions for the table size, crown height and culet size. After years and years, they slowly transformed the Old European cuts from the 1800s, into a round shape, with 58 facets, designed today. Read More >
